Cognitive Psychology Lab
In April 2010 I opened the Cognitive Psychology Lab, the Department of Psychology's first experimental psychology laboratory. It is equipped with six testing stations, purpose built vibrating handles for research on vibro-tactile stimulation, and hopefully soon a multi-track audio system for research using spatialized sound. Eye tracking and ERP equipment is also accessible through our Clinical Neuropsychology Group.
My research
My overall interest is in memory and attention, especially the cognitive mechanisms underpinning short-term memory (serial memory and associative memory in particular) and the capture of attention by unexpected events. Lately I have focused on studying the behavioral distraction yielded by unexpected changes in a stream of auditory or tactile stimuli. While my work mostly centers on theoretical aspects of these themes, I am also involved in research involving the measurement of brain activity using EEG and MEG technologies.
Background
I'm a Ramon y Cajal Fellow at the Department of Psychology, University of the Balearic Islands, which I joined at the end of 2008. I'm also an External Research Associate at the University of Western Australia. Before moving to Spain, I was a Reader in Cognitive Psychology at the University of Plymouth (UK), where I worked during eight years. Prior to that, I was a Research Associate at the University of Cardiff (UK), where I did my PhD under the supervision of Prof. Dylan Jones OBE. For more information, check my CV.
